Dorsey is an independent consultant based in Dallas, Texas. He retired from public accounting (August 2016) after nearly forty years in the audit practice and national offices of Arthur Andersen and Grant Thornton. Since retiring, he has been working as an accounting and auditing expert on investigations and monitorships; has been advising the implementation of a new accounting standard for loan losses, and is a director of a not-for-profit organization.
Dorsey’s experience in public accounting ranged from: line audit practice; national office accounting principles group technical manager; managing partner of audit standards in Andersen’s global headquarters; a decade as an industry technical director and regulatory/legislative liaison in Washington, DC; nine years as national professional practice director (NPPD) in Grant Thornton’s audit practice; and five years as the national managing partner of innovation at Grant Thornton.
Dorsey is experienced in accounting investigations and monitorships, has been deposed, and has testified before the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.
He has participated in several remediation and compliance monitoring engagements for international companies involved in mortgage servicing, credit card lending, software and consulting services, oil and gas exploration and production, and professional services, reporting to enforcement personnel in the OCC, Federal Reserve Bank of NY, SEC, DOJ, EPA and the PCAOB. He also participated in peer reviews of other accounting firms and internal inspections for Andersen and Grant Thornton and assisted in the management of and responses to PCAOB inspections. In response to findings of such quality control efforts, he led teams in the development of policy, methodology, training and other responses.
Dorsey’s experience outside of client practice includes non-profit board service; leadership of numerous AICPA committees and task forces related to accounting and auditing; authorship of numerous published articles; co-editorship of an American Accounting Association journal on auditing; and numerous professional speaking engagements.
